You will need to use a different layout, or edit the layout you want to use. To do the latter do the following:

Go to the Layout Designer

Select the layout you want to change

Connect to the Team Project you are working with

In the layout, select the field you want to change

From the list of fields on the right double click the field name, this will paste the field into the layout at the current cursor position.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each instance of the field that is coming out as HTML.

Click Save Changes.

Now try importing work items again.

I am hoping to make changes to make this a smoother experience in the future.
To be valid, any layout must define a Default layout item, because it uses this for any work item type which is not explicitly defined in the layout.

The layout for each work item type is marked by a heading using a specific Word style. When you open an existing layout you can copy the heading from there to get the required style.

You can define different layouts for different work item types by naming the heading after the work item type. You can see examples of this in the existing layouts. But, as I said above, you must at least define one called "Default".

I hope this helps. If I have not been clear please feel free to ask for clarifications.
You can turn this option off either in the Word options or on the Team Ribbon.

As for the sort order, that is down to the sort order that is specified in the query you used. You should update your query to use the sort order you want. However, this will not update the sort order for any imports you have already done, you will need to start a new document to get the new query definition into your document.

I am trying to get a layout where it prints the Steps section from our Test Cases query. When I add the 'Steps' field to the layout, I get the index (e.g. 1,2,3,..) of the Step in the output, but not the remaining fields (Action, Expected Result).

Setup

Windows Server 2012

VS2012 (w/SP1)

Office 2012 Professional

TFS project hosted at tfs.visualstudio.com

I've got a 'direct link' query pulling in Test Cases, along with a link filter for "Shared Steps", which works like a champ using a copy of the "Simple with Headings (Scrum)". The only additional field I'm trying to include is that "Steps" field.

I'm afraid I don't have an instance of TFS 2010 to try and see if its compatibility between the two.

If you need any additional information, please let me know!

Appreciate any input you have to pull in those Steps.

Thanks,
It is possible to change the XML by hand, but I would not recommend it, I have never done it myself.
I know this is a limitation of the current tool and that it ought to change, but you shouldn't need to rewrite the whole document if you can cut and paste the non-query parts of the document.
When importing the Work Item to Word 2010, the font always defaults to Calibri 11. It does not matter how I format it in TFS, and it does not matter how I format it in the template in the Layout Designer.

Is this a known issue? Is there any work-around for getting the correct font and size when importing rich HTML descriptions. I have been using the tip in the blog here:

I noted the query bookmarks (TFS_WI_Qn_Wy) and found their corresponding <Query></Query>-lines in item1.xml and item2.xml and removed them, but apparently it wasn't supposed to be that easy...

I am getting an: "Work item 5526 bookmark is present but the work item content is missing from the document for query 11", and they are wrongly aligned for the rest of the document.

But I can't seem to find any other XML file containing the queries, so I guess there is no manual work-around for this?

Rewriting the document from scratch is not a very appealing option, but I might as well do it, now that I know the pitfalls, and I do get a chance to get my layouts better.

First of all though let me explain, it is by design that you get one building block per work item, there is no concept of a building block containing a work item and any linked items all in the same building block.

One of the things you seem to want is to bold the labels like "Area Path", to do this just edit the layout in the Layout Designer and format the label as you want it to be.
If you want the linked test cases to be indented then change the formatting in the Layout Designer, pick the Test Case building block and indent it.

The one thing you can't do is follow the linked test case building blocks with more information from the parent requirement, as I said that is the way it is currently designed.

If I have missed any important aspects of the desired output that you need then let me know.
