Error trying to create custom "New Layout"

Can anyone explain how to avoid getting the following error when trying to create a custom template:

"Cannot create layout New Layout because the Default layout item is either empty or missing."

This happens when I try to create a custom "Building Block" from a completely blank page.

If you use the layout designer to look at any existing layout you will see a Default heading. To be valid, any layout must define a Default layout item, because it uses this for any work item type which is not explicitly defined in the layout.

The layout for each work item type is marked by a heading using a specific Word style. When you open an existing layout you can copy the heading from there to get the required style.

You can define different layouts for different work item types by naming the heading after the work item type. You can see examples of this in the existing layouts. But, as I said above, you must at least define one called "Default".

I hope this helps. If I have not been clear please feel free to ask for clarifications.
